Cleaning your timber floors.
So, you have a shiny new timber floor and your installer has left your house with it looking pristine and perfect…………. then you let the dog inside and the kids come home. And although one of the best features of timber floors is you don’t see all the dust and dirt, it is hard to hide those muddy foot prints or the morning breakfast spilt on the floor.
And so the panic sets in & you buy 100 different floor cleaners and ask yourself how to do I clean this floor without causing expansion, water under the boards or damaging the exterior of the timber? Well lucky for you it is pretty easy & the simpler the products used the better! So you can forget spending $100000 on floor cleaning products as I not only have an affordable alternative that all households have, it is chemical free.
Keeping the floor free from dust and dirt will minimize scratches, dents & surface damage. And if timber is looked after well it can last decades. One of the best ways to do this is by sweeping your floors regularly particularly in high traffic areas. Many people opt for a robo vacuum so that the floors are constantly being “swept” and a good stick vacuum such as a Dyson is also a great way to vacuum up a smaller high traffic area or a contained spill. But a traditional broom will also do the same thing.
Almost every household has a bottle of regular vinegar (see told you, chemical free) or mentholated spirits and this along with a spray bottle and some water it’s the only floor cleaner you need after the floor has had a good sweep or vacuum. Mix a cap full of vinegar or mentholated spirits in a spray bottle with water. Using an anti static mop with a flat surface & clean cloth attached, spray your floors with the mixture and follow along with your mop. Do not use a traditional wet type mop, this will leave too much water on the floors and can over time create unwanted expansion, moisture under the boards or cupping, all things you want to avoid for the longevity of the floor.
Always remove any excess water on your floors. It is important that any excess moisture is not left on the surface.
And, it is that simple! Sweep/vacuum, spray bottle and mop………. Or pay the cleaner to do it for you! :)
