The benefits of timber flooring.

Engineered timber flooring. Construction by: Jco Construction

Timber has been used for centuries to create a natural look and feel when it comes to flooring. And while years ago the only option was hardwood timbers, we now have engineered timber as a more durable and cost effect option.

The market is also flooded with more modern materials for floor coverings including vinyl, laminate and carpet. And yes while these alternatives can be a cheaper option at times, cheaper is not always better.

According to ATFA (Australian Timber Flooring Association) timber flooring makes up 25% of the Australian flooring market. And with reports like Planet Ark Wood – Housing, Health, Humanity Report stating that using timber in the home can reduce blood pressure, heart rate and stress levels there is no wonder why its market share is growing year on year despite the cheaper alternatives. In this blog we explain some of the benefits for installing engineered timber flooring in your home.

Timber/Wood Flooring Benefits

Environment

Engineered Timber flooring is better for the environment than alternative options such as tiles, vinyl and carpet. Mainly due to this being a natural product. Engineered timber is also better again than hard wood flooring as the timber layer is thinner meaning more floor boards can be produced from each tree. This of course means that a more sustainable production process can be used and less logging which is always a plus for the environment.

Professional Opinion

Being an Interior Designer myself my personal opinion is that timber flooring simply looks and feels better than the alternatives. It creates warmth and texture to a room helping to finish off the over all look. Timber does create a homely feel. Far from the stark, cold look and feel of tiles or polished concrete, timber has a warm homely feel. No one wants to live in a house, they want to live in a home.

Property Value

Timber flooring can enhance a properties value according to Sydneyartflooring. Buyers know when they enter a property if the flooring looks and feels like timber. Timber flooring is often sort after when it comes to high end property. While timber also adds a sense of luxury to a home.

Less Toxic

Reading The Ultimate Guide to non-toxic flooring you quickly learn that production methods of synthetic flooring options such as Vinyl and Laminate can be toxic. The chemicals and plastics used can create what is called off-gassing. A process where these chemicals and gasses are released into the air. Timber being a natural product does not produce off-gassing.

Durability

Engineered timber has a plywood core which is multilayered with a hardwood timber veneer. This makes the floor board strong and durable. This is the reason you can walk into old houses and buildings and original floor boards are still in use. This is because timber is durable.

Ultimately like alot of interior design decisions it does come down to personal choice & budget. However, timber never dates, looks and feels beautiful, is durable and has the added advantages of being more eco friendly. If it is a luxurious, strong flooring you are after, engineered timber is the perfect option.
